*REVISED Aug 4th 2009* The sound system at Anu.

Date:
Wednesday, April 29, 2009 4:10pm

As most of you know we have been having problems on and off with the sound at Anu. Most of this is due to the fact that the place got flooded do to a fire upstairs. I went through the system today and we found that the wires and connectors had oxidized due to the water. The contacts have been cleaned and the distortion has now completely stopped. Just wanted to pass the news along. This should make for great shows once again.

i think it still sounds rather sad. needs one more sub, and those monitors need some major replacing
and the mixer is missing knobs :(

and new or not its a room full of self powered mackies. i doubt jesus himself could turn that water into anything more than box wine.

yeah a little step up would be good. those things are all so mid range punchy. i mean it's just a bar, not a night club. but if you're going to book serious international talent at your bar, you should come correct. not broke down budget wedding dj setup. just my 2 rubles.

Word. I've always been disappointed with the sound at Anu.

My understanding is that the situation is pretty limited because Anu gets sound complaints from the neighbors. We have asked about bringing in an extra sub for our shows and been told it's a no-go for that reason.

The big problem IMO is that because there's not enough bass, there's a tendency to just turn up the master to compensate, which results in ear fatigue from too much mid/treble really quickly. The mixer-knob and monitor situations, however, are just plain old sad.

If enough people feel strongly about it we should just organize a throw-down, do a $15 cover or something and use all the money to split the upgrade cost with Anu's management. Question is whether anyone's really motivated enough to do all the organizing, would enough people would come out to support, and can a serious system fly with the neighbors.

- yes the sound is what it is and a sub does need to be replaced. the booth monitors that are a foot and a half from the djs head work fine if they are not over driven (which they are every time i go in besides wednesdays)

- the place is what it is, its not a club and is a somewhat a bit of a hole at this point. no it does not have the best sound. (it never did and never will) but its a small place where you don't have security up your ass or looking over your shoulder. when you order a drink it is good price and you get a great pour. its not a place with hot chicks and their douche bag boy friends. its just good down to earth, real people.

- yes, international djs have choices to play in smaller venues that they didn't have when we started years ago and most of them now do.

- the crowd is always great on wednesdays nights and i know that plenty of the local djs in town still have a fun time when they play. and lets be honest, it is one of the few night/collectives that still books people besides our residents to play on a regular basis.

- again, i am in no way sticking up for the sound system i am just saying that it is what it is. you guys that are complaining about the system always look like you are having a blast when you are playing.

- re the knobs :: i can't tell you how many times i have super glued new knobs on the mixer to come in the next week and find them gone. i think that speaks more of the dumb ass djs more then anything.

- the reality of the situation is that the owners have 4 new places now that are making great money and don't want to put money in to the place anymore. i would not be surprised if they dump it soon. it seems silly for me or anyone else to put money in to someone else's place. so thats the deal.

my three cents.

I would have moved the Satellite party years ago if I could find another place I could walk behind the bar and buy my friends a drink whenever I wanted to.

No need to get defensive, Scott. I don't think anyone means to direct criticism at you or Satellite, and ultimately the complaints are rooted in the fact that many of us have spent a lot of time at Anu (a good chunk of that obviously being for Satellite). It's *because* people have a blast when they are playing out (or just listening) at Anu that they bring this up. Obviously it's not the most spectacular venue in the world and never will be, but I don't think any electronic music fan who's spent any significant amount of time in SF doesn't have at least a fond memory or two of the place.

Whoever ripped the knobs off is simply an asshole, though. That's not even easy to do.

sorry if i am coming across defensive. i just wanted to point out the good things too. i do probably take it a little personal seeing as it has been my home for so long.

It's true, we all know what to expect at Anu. It's not like one week the sound is killer, and the next week it sucks, yet everyone books out of town djs there, then bitch about sound/equipment issues. Anu is a nice place to hang out and hear your friends play, but its limited in what it can be.

Aug 8th. I will be putting two new subwoofers, a new mixer, and new booth monitors in to the system at Anu. For those of you who still love to play the spot it will be a little nicer. CheeriOs - CarrelliO
